Back when surfers headed south to Baja Mexico to avoid the crowded Southern Californian surf scene in the late 1950s, they befriended the indigenous people of Mexico, who introduced them to these types of simple yet complex and rustic handwoven sandals.  Since then, huaraches are also referred to as 'surfer sandals.'
